I put these in a side pocket of one of the coolers we took to the 500, then promptly forgot about it. It lasted all day in 96-degree heat and being crushed between and underneath things to and from the track. I found them the next day when I was cleaning up, still largely undestroyed, but feeling a little squishy, so I put them in the freezer. I was surprised it didn’t come out as chocolate mush! Oh, and these are the coconut M&Ms by the way, and they’re delicious, even when somewhat squished!

Goodbyes

Carb day prep
Good times are imminent, and this is how we get ready for them. Tomorrow is a day of speed and sun!
Better traffic
So I’m snoozing my way into work on yet another Wednesday morning, and suddenly this automobile shoots by me in the left lane. It was so sudden I didn’t even get the settings changed on the camera before I started shooting one-handed. It was the Wednesday before the Indy 500, and I knew exactly what was going on immediately. It is on this day every year that the track has a “drive around the Brickyard” day where you get to drive your own automobile out onto the track. My dad’s Model T club has been attending this event for several years now. I knew this had to be one of the guys from the club. He happened to stay on my route for another couple of miles, but at the first intersection where he pulled into the left turn lane to head south, we happened to hit a red light. I jumped out of my car and ran up and said hello to him. Man, what a cool way to start the morning.
As an aside, I just KNOW this guy was running a Model A crank in that thing! He was hitting 35mph with no problems! Model Ts just never could turn that high with the factory non-counterweighted crank. This thing was a rocket!
Indiana in the month of May…
I forget that, outside of Indiana, you don’t generally start seeing race driver’s faces popping up on billboards when May rolls around. Regardless of my general feelings about all things mechanical, I do think it’s particularly fab that we have a tradition inherent to our state which is a national phenomenon. There’s a lot of corn around here, no doubt about it, but come the 5th month of the year, the asphalt in Speedway plays host to something truly amazing, and nowhere else on earth can claim that particular history.
My loot!
My take for the holiday season. I know what you’re saying. You’re saying, “Tom, you’ve shown us numerous pictures in the past of various automotive tomes. It’s apparent you have a sizable collection. Don’t you have enough already?” And to that I say, “No! Woohoooooo!”
